African American Literature

I just had to create this post on something so disturbing to me. In highschool I started reading books like Eric Jerome Dickey and fell in love with reading. Carl Weber was on my next list and then I ran into Nikki Turner o_0 ..I think I completely went "Ghetto" Book crazy...Then after a while I started to notice that i'm reading the same story over and over and over and over...Drug Dealer boyfriend kingpin at that (really?), Grimey friends, triflen mother or grandmother, everyone is basically ghetto, someone must always be dealing drugs, be pregnant, get shot up, shoot some dice or SOMETHING !!!..I mean it took me and my friend Yas atleast 4 hours to find good LOVE STORIES by Black Authors...it's very disheartening to know that most of our African American Lit in the bookstores consists of these types of books. Anything with real substance is in other locations like history or politis or self help, which are isles that alot of black youth don't frequent. I wrote a couple of books in my day of course never did anything with them but something in me is telling me it's not so much of a want but i feel it's a need to try to put books out there that young black adults can read that isn't always about shoot em up bang bang. I mean isn't the purpose of fiction to escape your everyday life and read about something else...I don't think kids living in the ghetto need to read about living in the ghetto...and I'm sure there are people who would disagree with me but that's why the word opinion was created.
